Battle of oranges - Ivrea - Italy

The Carnival of Ivrea is the oldest historic Carnival in Italy (the first report dates back to 1808). During this unique event, history and legends combine to create a huge public festival which is deeply symbolic, in which the people of Ivrea celebrate their right to self-rule, commemorating an episode from the Middle Ages where the city was liberated from tyranny. Best known for the spectacular Battle of the Oranges, which unfolds over three days in the city’s main squares, the Carnival of Ivrea features a complicated ceremony that incorporates various eras and culminates in a historical parade.

 

The real star of the show is the Beautiful Miller’s Daughter, a symbol of freedom and the heroine of the festival since her first appearance in 1858.
